Reader Question: I need an ergonomic split mechanical keyboard. Help?
Q: Can you suggest a split mechanical keyboard? I need one to help with my RSI.
A: The standard recommendation for split mechanical keyboard is Mistel Barroco
Mistel Barocco split RGB black (also available in regular backlight or white) |
Mistel Barroco, nicknamed "split Poker" as it is virtually identical to the popular 60% Poker keyboard from IKBC/Vortex, is available in a variety of Cherry switches, black or white, and regular backlight vs. RGB. It is rather costly but the only other true split mechanical keyboard is the Matias Ergo Pro which costs even more and is not MX-compatible. The popular Kinesis Freestyle 2 split ergonomic keyboard is NOT mechanical.
The only other choice easily available, split, AND mechanical is the Chinese "Koolertron" which is a rebadged Chinese "ThumbBoard" which is very flat and feels closer to two halves of keyboards.

If money is no object, you can always get an Ergodox or Atreus, but those would almost require you to relearn typing altogether.
